“Underdog Armor” Event at the U this Wednesday

Coming up this Wednesday, March 17, U students are hosting an “Underdog Armor” event at the Union Patio from 3:30 – 6pm.

The event is a fundraiser/petition drive for Salt Lake County’s K9 police dogs.
Those K9s do a lot to protect our community, but there isn’t enough funding to give ‘em all bulletproof vests, so the wonderful students are hoping to raise some money for them.

Here’s a description from the organizers:

According to Wendell Nope, an instructor with the Utah Police Academy, “K9 units know they are more likely to encounter potentially deadly situations because they are used to investigate tough crimes involving drugs, explosives, and also to pursue fleeing criminals. A primary reason for having dogs is so that an officer can go home at night after an experience with a deadly force encounter.”

Our goal is to raise awareness for the valuable service these dogs provide and the need we have to provide them with adequate protection. We also aim to gather signatures in an effort to gain recognition of this issue in legislation.

Please come out and support our cause. Hopefully we will have a K9 unit giving a demonstration between 4:30 and 5:30, to show what these dogs do and why they deserve protective vests.

Go check it out! And check out their facebook event page here.
